Scipione Vannutelli was an Italian painter born in Rome who died in 1894. A pupil of Tommaso Minardi and then Carl Wurzinger, he developed a practice embracing history painting, portraiture and genre scenes. His training and travels brought him into contact with several European traditions beyond the Roman artistic milieu to which his career remained closely connected.
I funerali di Giulietta, held by the Galleria Nazionale in Rome, translates its Shakespearean subject into a composition with a Pre-Raphaelite atmosphere. Ritratto di giovinetta reveals another register: flesh modelled with glazes contrasts with a freer treatment of the clothing. The municipal collection in Genazzano also preserves a group of his oils and watercolours. These works bring together historical narrative, the study of the figure and the variety of his pictorial means.
This profile brings together identity references for Scipione Vannutelli and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
