The French painter Émile Van Marcke, born in Sèvres in 1827 and deceased in Hyères in 1890, built his body of work around rural landscapes and livestock. He began his career at the Manufacture de Sèvres, where he worked from 1853 to 1862. It was during this period that he met Constant Troyon, who encouraged him to look to nature for inspiration. He travelled throughout France in search of locations, before gradually focusing his studies on the countryside of Normandy and its herds, particularly cows. This subject became central to his work, addressed in landscapes in which livestock occupies a prominent place.
Several works held in public collections bear witness to these studies. Foire au village, an oil on canvas dated 1861, is listed at the Musée d’art Roger-Quilliot in Clermont-Ferrand. The Walters Art Museum in Baltimore holds, among other works, L’Approche de l’orage, dated to around 1872, as well as Aux Aurores and La Mare, also oils on canvas. Works and their dissemination are also represented at the Musée d’Orsay by the engraving Des vaches and a photogravure of Le Retour du troupeau, whose eponymous work is held at the Musée des beaux-arts de Lyon. Vaches et mouton au bord d’une mare and Vache fuyant l’orage, oils on wood, as well as Pâturage, an oil on canvas, are listed at the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Reims. Van Marcke is recorded as a knight of the Légion d’honneur in 1872.
This profile brings together identity references for Emile van Marcke and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
