Childe Hassam, born in Dorchester, Massachusetts, in 1859 and deceased in 1935, was a major figure in American impressionism. Following his beginnings in Boston, he lived in Paris from 1886 to 1889 and became interested in French impressionist painting. He subsequently settled in New York, observing its streets, public gardens and the transformations of urban life.
His broken brushwork and bright palette convey atmospheric changes as well as the movement of crowds. He also painted the gardens and rocky coastline of the Isles of Shoals, associated with poet Celia Thaxter. During World War I, his views of flag-decorated Fifth Avenue gave pictorial expression to his patriotism. As a painter, watercolourist and printmaker, Hassam explored relationships between everyday experience, light and American identity.
This profile brings together identity references for Childe Hassam and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
