Yun Hyong-keun

Born : 1928Died : 2007Documented citizenships : South Korea

Yun Hyong-keun (1928–2007) was a Korean painter associated with Dansaekhwa. His life was marked by war and repeated political imprisonment. From the 1970s, he developed paintings based on a mixture of ultramarine blue and burnt umber. These colours, which he associated with heaven and earth, produced very dark tones on cotton or linen canvases left without a preparatory ground.

Applied with a broad brush, diluted paint penetrates the fibres and forms vertical masses resembling gateways. The empty spaces between forms contribute as much to the composition as the painted areas. Retrospectives at the MMCA in Seoul in 2018 and Palazzo Fortuny in Venice in 2019 placed this economy of means within his personal history. Works also belong to the collection of M+ in Hong Kong.
