Francesco Bartolozzi studied painting in Florence and subsequently trained as an engraver in Venice. Settling in London in 1764, he worked for George III and became a founding member of the Royal Academy in 1768. His workshop circulated images after old masters and contemporary artists, including Giovanni Battista Cipriani and Angelica Kauffmann. He ended his career in Lisbon, where he became director of the Academy.
Stipple engraving occupies a central place in this reproductive and decorative output. Poetry, published in 1783 after Cipriani, combines stipple and etching in a red impression held by the Metropolitan Museum. Tancred and Erminia of 1784 at LACMA likewise reproduces a composition by Cipriani, combining the same techniques in a print made with sanguine ink.
This profile brings together identity references for Francesco Bartolozzi and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
