Joseph Csaky was a sculptor based in Paris from 1908. After brief studies in decorative arts in Budapest, he learned modelling and carving in manufacturing workshops. In Paris he settled at La Ruche and presented his early Cubist work at the Salon d’Automne and the Salon des Indépendants. Head, a stone sculpture of 1914 in the Centre Pompidou, translates the human figure into planes and prismatic volumes.
From 1926, Csaky returned towards a more rounded figuration. Nude with a Burden, dated by the museum between 1928 and 1937, nevertheless retains the presence of the stone block in its representation of a laden body. The Family, a pencil drawing of 1961 in the Kröller-Müller Museum, also documents his work on paper.
This profile brings together identity references for Joseph Csaky and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
