Eduard Magnus

Eduard Magnus was a Berlin painter who made portraiture the centre of his career after initially painting genre scenes. He attended both university and the Academy of Fine Arts, while Jakob Schlesinger encouraged his artistic direction. Travels to Paris and Italy between 1826 and 1829 broadened his training. His portrait practice moved from a Romantic sensibility towards a more realistic approach to the sitter.

In 1846, the singer Jenny Lind asked Magnus to paint her portrait. A professor at the Berlin Academy since 1844, he exhibited the picture there before showing it at the Paris World’s Fair in 1855. The Double Portrait of Consul Friedrich Klentz and His Wife, painted in Naples in 1840, demonstrates another aspect of his practice: the Nationalgalerie’s commentary draws attention to his careful rendering of silk and velvet.

This profile brings together identity references for Eduard Magnus and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
