A Dutch painter established in Italy, Caspar van Wittel is also known as Gaspare Vanvitelli. Trained by Matthias Withoos, he is documented in Rome in 1675. His collaboration with the engineer Cornelis Meyer on a project for navigation along the Tiber accompanied the development of his topographical approach. His urban views give particular attention to the modern city and its everyday activities.
In Piazza Navona of 1699, held by the Carmen Thyssen Collection, the Palazzo Pamphili, Sant’Agnese church and the Fountain of the Four Rivers structure a broad panorama. Preparatory drawings reveal a systematic construction of perspective. The Rijksmuseum’s View of the Abbey of Grottaferrata, in brown ink and grey wash, demonstrates the importance of drawing to his observation of Italian architecture.
