In the documented record, Roger de La Fresnaye’s painting is distinguished by Cubist compositions with geometrically stylized, highly coloured forms, developed into figure scenes, landscapes and still lifes. His training in Paris takes him from the Académie Julian to the École des beaux-arts, where he studies from 1904 to 1908, and then to the Académie Ranson in 1908, under Maurice Denis and Paul Sérusier; in 1910, he also begins studying sculpture with Aristide Maillol at the Académie de la Grande-Chaumière.
From 1910, he exhibits regularly at the Salon des Indépendants and the Salon d’Automne. He joins the Puteaux group in 1911 and takes part in the exhibitions of the Section d’Or; his first solo exhibition takes place in Paris in 1914. His turn towards Cubism from 1911 belongs to this period. La Conquête de l’air, dated 1913 and held at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, depicts him in conversation with his brother, an engineer at the Nieuport aviation company.
Called up during the First World War, the artist contracts tuberculosis and is discharged from military service in 1918. According to the biographical entry, the deterioration of his health leads him to abandon large Cubist compositions in favour of more intimate and realistic works, often imbued with lyricism and spirituality. Works held in public collections include Nu (1910), at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, and Artillerie (1911), at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
In 1951, the musée des Beaux-Arts de Lyon presents an exhibition devoted to the artist, bringing together 70 works. His work is notably the subject of the catalogue raisonné published by Germain Seligman in 2000, followed by studies collected in Par-delà le cubisme, a volume edited by Françoise Lucbert and Yves Chevrefils Desbiolles and published in 2017.
