Louis-Léopold Boilly, a French painter born in La Bassée in 1761 and died in Paris in 1845, practised both painting and lithography. He began studying painting in Douai with Charles-Alexandre-Joseph Caullet, continuing until the age of seventeen, then studied trompe-l’œil in Arras with Dominique Doncre. He exhibited at the Salon for the first time in 1791. In 1833, he was appointed a chevalier of the Légion d’honneur and became a member of the Institut de France.
The catalogue published in 2019 lists 2,853 works spanning half a century of artistic production. From 1823, Boilly produced the series of lithographs Les Grimaces, described as a humorous satire of human characters. Among his paintings is La Réunion d’artistes dans l’atelier d’Isabey, an oil on canvas dated 1798, held at the Musée du Louvre. Le messager ou Le commissionnaire is also listed as an oil on canvas dating from around 1793 and measuring 56 × 46 cm. According to the sale catalogue, this work was probably shown at the Paris Salon in 1793, and was later included in an exhibition held in 1928 at the Kunstverein in Basel, devoted to works from private collections in Basel.
