Eduard von Grützner
Documented citizenships : Germany
Eduard von Grützner is associated with Munich genre painting of the second half of the nineteenth century, alongside Carl Spitzweg and Franz von Defregger. At the Academy of Fine Arts Munich, he joined Hermann Anschütz’s class in 1865, followed by Karl von Piloty’s class in 1867. In 1870, he set up his studio in his garden house on Schwanthalerstraße in Munich.
His interest in religious figures is part of a long-standing relationship with the Church, shaped in particular by his family’s ties to Pastor Fischer of Großkarlowitz. Lesender Geistlicher (“reading clergyman”) offers a documented example: the Lempertz entry describes this oil on canvas, measuring 39 × 30 cm, signed “Ed. Grützner” at the lower left. The published provenance mentions Galerie Paffrath in Düsseldorf in March 1933, followed by a private collection in the Rhineland. The same entry refers to László Balogh’s monograph on the painter, published in Mainburg in 1991.
This profile brings together identity references for Eduard von Grützner and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
