Johann Friedrich August Tischbein, known as “Leipziger-Tischbein”, was a German painter born in Maastricht in 1750 and died in Heidelberg in 1812. A member of the Tischbein dynasty, he was a pupil of Jean-Georges Wille. From 1795 to 1800, he served in Dessau as court painter to princes Leopold III and Friedrich Franz of Anhalt-Dessau. During this period, he also worked in Weimar and Jena on several occasions.
The portraits he produced there include one of Charlotte Luise Auguste, née Richter, as well as two portraits of the physician Justus Christian Loder. One of these portraits of Loder is now held at the Museum Georg Schäfer in Schweinfurt. An auction catalogue also describes a portrait of Bertha Loder as a child, painted in oil on canvas and signed at the lower right “F. Tischbein p:1798”.
