Ludwig Lange (1808–1868) worked as an architect, draughtsman and painter. Following architectural training, he became Carl Rottmann’s pupil in 1830 and accompanied him to Greece in 1834 as an adviser on architectural drawings. Appointed building councillor by King Otto, Lange taught for three years at the Royal Gymnasium in Athens before returning to Munich in 1838.
His views combine precise perspective with the pictorial effects of wash and watercolour. The Gate of Athena Archegetis and the Roman Agora Seen from the West, an oil painting of 1842, draws on his Greek experience. A drawing of the same view is held by Munich’s Staatliche Graphische Sammlung. According to its published provenance, the painting passed to his daughter and remained within the family through subsequent generations.
This profile brings together identity references for Ludwig Lange and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
