Felice Torelli

Born : 1667Died : 1748

The Italian painter Felice Torelli, born in Verona in 1667 and deceased in Bologna in 1748, was active from the end of the seventeenth century to the first half of the eighteenth century. His training took him from Verona, where he began his apprenticeship, to Bologna, where he subsequently studied under Giovanni Gioseffo dal Sole. In 1710, he was among the founders of the Accademia Clementina in Bologna, where he taught.

Giovanni Domenico Ferretti came to Bologna to work with Torelli; Torelli’s pupils at the Accademia Clementina also included the brothers Ubaldo and Gaetano Gandolfi. The works noted include mythological subjects such as Ercole che protegge le figlie di Licomede, an oil on canvas held at the Pinacoteca Tosio Martinengo in Brescia, Il centauro Nesso rapisce Deianira, also painted in oil on canvas, and Le Sacrifice d’Iphigénie, mentioned in a private collection. Religious subjects are represented by San Girolamo e il Beato Colombini fondatore dell’ordine delle gesuate, dated 1723 and located at the oratory of the SS. Trinità, by a Martyrdom of Saint Maurelius in Ferrara Cathedral, by a Madonna and Child with angels and saints at the Chiesa del Suffragio in Fano, and by a Saint Peter Martyr at the Detroit Institute of Arts.
