Luca Cambiaso

Born : 1527Died : 1585

Luca Cambiaso (1527–1585), born in Moneglia, ranks among the leading painters of the Genoese Renaissance. Trained by his father Giovanni, he collaborated with him on the decoration of Antonio Doria’s palace from 1544. He subsequently created extensive frescoes in Genoa’s palaces and churches, working notably with Giovanni Battista Castello, known as Il Bergamasco.

His early compositions favour emphatic foreshortening and exaggerated gestures; those of the 1550s and 1560s become more restrained. His drawings are distinguished by the reduction of bodies to geometric, sometimes cubic volumes. The Rape of the Sabines at the Villa Imperiale exemplifies his activity as a fresco painter. Summoned to Spain by Philip II in 1583, he worked at the Escorial, where he died two years later.

This profile brings together identity references for Luca Cambiaso and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
