Emanuel de Witte, born in Alkmaar around 1617 and deceased in Amsterdam in 1692, was a leading Dutch painter of church interiors. In Delft he studied with Evert van Aelst and initially painted biblical and mythological subjects. Around 1650 architecture became his speciality. His move to Amsterdam in 1652 supplied new subjects, notably the Oude Kerk and Nieuwe Kerk.
His paintings do more than record buildings accurately: he sometimes combines elements from different churches to construct an imaginary space. Piers, arcades and furnishings organise perspectives animated by contrasts of light. Worshippers, visitors and dogs recall the everyday uses of these extensive interiors. De Witte also painted markets and domestic scenes, continuing his investigation of the relationships between human figures, spatial organisation and illumination.
This profile brings together identity references for Emanuel de Witte and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
