Born in Carpentras in 1825, the painter and lithographer Jules Laurens developed a body of work ranging from Orientalist paintings and portraits of Auvergnat and Comtadin peasants to landscapes, the genre with which he is particularly associated. From 1842 to 1846, he trained in Paris at the École des beaux-arts and in Paul Delaroche’s studio; he was admitted to the École in fifth place out of six hundred. He unsuccessfully entered the Prix de Rome in 1845. In 1845, he painted Ulysse et Nausicaa, a work now listed at the musée Comtadin-Duplessis in Carpentras.
During a mission, he assembled several hundred sketches, drawings and watercolours devoted in particular to historic monuments and everyday life in the regions he travelled through. The portfolios he brought back are now held at the École des beaux-arts de Paris, in Avignon and in Carpentras, notably at the bibliothèque Inguimbertine and in the museums. He also brought back works of Qajar art from his journey, which were later donated to the musée Calvet in Avignon and the musée Comtadin-Duplessis in Carpentras. La Mosquée bleue à Tauris en Perse, dated 1872 and held at the musée Fabre in Montpellier, attests to the place of the Orient in his repertoire. Alongside these subjects, landscapes occupy a significant place: his work is associated with Corot and the Barbizon school, while L’Aqueduc de Carpentras et le Mont Ventoux is among the works held in Carpentras.
From 1850 to 1880, Laurens worked in Paris, regularly took part in the Salon and other exhibitions, and received commissions, including for publications; he was awarded a medal at the 1867 Exposition universelle in Paris. After returning to the Comtat in 1880, he published a biography of his brother as well as mainly artistic reflections in La Légende des ateliers. A collector, he also enriched the library-museum of Carpentras with donations of works by contemporary artists, including Victor Hugo, Ingres, Auguste Bonheur, Eugène Cicéri, Gustave Doré and Alexandre Cabanel. In 1982, the musée Hébert in La Tronche devoted an exhibition of drawings, watercolours and lithographs to Jules Laurens and his brother.
This profile brings together identity references for Jules Laurens and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
