Domenico Tintoretto, also known by the names Domenico Robusti and Dominique Tintoret, was born in Venice in 1560 and died there on 17 May 1635. He grew up under the tutelage of his father, the painter Tintoretto.
Works associated with him include Lady Showing Her Breast, dated 1580–1590 and held at the Prado; the Ex-voto of Matteo Soranzo, dated to around 1580–1590 and held at the Musée de Grenoble; and Joachim Expelled from the Temple, dated 1587 and held in the church of San Trovaso. The Portrait of Galileo is dated 1605–1607; the Portrait of Doge Marino Grimani is held at the Cincinnati Art Museum, while Renaud and Armida, an oil painting on canvas, is at the Musée des beaux-arts d’Agen.
Narrative subjects appear notably in Tancred Baptising Clorinda, dated 1585 and held at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. The Triumph of Venice belongs to a different register: this work occupies a ceiling in the Doge’s Palace in Venice. Two other works, The Penitent Magdalene and Christ Crowned with Thorns, are held at the Capitoline Museums in Rome. The Portrait of a Venetian Patrician, an oil painting on canvas measuring 106 × 88 cm, is listed under his name in the Fototeca of the Fondazione Zeri; the entry states that it was formerly in the possession of Giovanni Salocchi in Florence.
