Arnold Topp

Documented citizenships : Germany

Born in Soest in 1887, Arnold Topp first trained as a teacher before studying at the Royal Art School in Düsseldorf from 1909. He took a teaching post in Brandenburg in 1913 while maintaining connections with artists in Soest, particularly Wilhelm Morgner. His contact with Herwarth Walden’s circle led to participation in Der Sturm exhibitions from 1915. Topp developed an expressive, nonfigurative painting and maintained this commitment as other tendencies gained prominence. Watercolour, ink and printmaking processes broadened his exploration of colour and form. Missing since 1945, he left a body of work that links artistic exchange in Soest with the networks of the Berlin avant-garde and its opportunities for exhibition and circulation.

This profile brings together identity references for Arnold Topp and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
