Myra Landau

Born : 1926Died : 2018Documented citizenships : Mexico

Myra Landau (1926–2018) was born in Bucharest and reached Brazil with her family after fleeing Romania in 1940. Self-taught, she developed an abstraction based on moving geometric lines and experimented with pastel brushed onto linen canvas. Settling in Mexico in the early 1960s, she began her Rhythms in 1965, a body of drawings, paintings and textiles. These compositions bring lines and colours together in an exploration that is both spontaneous and analytical. She joined the Salon Independiente and became a professor at the Universidad Veracruzana in 1974. Her later life took her to Italy, Israel and the Netherlands, where she died in Alkmaar. She became a Mexican citizen in 1960.

This profile brings together identity references for Myra Landau and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
