Painter and sculptor Phillip John Martin made painted posters on wrapping paper a central theme of his work after a trip to Austria in 1951. After attending Felsted from 1938 to 1948 and serving for three years in the Royal Navy, he entered the Third Order of St Francis as a lay brother in 1948. He later left the order, owing to philosophical differences according to the biographical notice, and devoted himself to painting.
He began painting in London in 1948, then was artist in residence at the Abbey Arts Centre in 1949–1950. From 1953 to 1956, he worked with his wife, the artist Helen Marshall, in Positano, Ischia and Florence. A work titled «Rencontre», described in a sale notice, is a mixed-media work on paper, signed and dated «(19)59»; it also bears the inscription «Basel».
During his stay in India, Martin exhibited at the Jehangir Art Gallery in Mumbai with Helen Marshall and Bhupen Khakhar. On returning to Australia in 1969, he took part with Marshall in the exhibition inaugurating the new Holdsworth Galleries in Paddington, Sydney. The couple then lived for a year in Melbourne, where he exhibited at the Tolarno Gallery in St Kilda. Works by Martin are recorded in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the National Gallery of Australia in Canberra. A file held at the Archives de la critique d’art brings together letters and postcards from Phillip and Helen Martin as part of a correspondence dated from 1962 to 1972.
