Michelangelo Maestri was an Italian artist active in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries who died in Rome in 1812. His gouaches participated in the rediscovery of ancient imagery, adapting motifs from frescoes at Pompeii and Herculaneum. Engraved publications by the Accademia Ercolanese helped transmit these models, carrying mythological figures and allegorical compositions from the printed volume to the painted sheet. Maestri sometimes added friezes drawn from the same sources to his paintings on black grounds. His practice thus combined careful drawing, colour and decorative arrangement. European travellers acquired the works as souvenirs of their Italian journeys. The Grand Tour provides a context for their circulation and their engagement with the visual culture of antiquity.
This profile brings together identity references for Michelangelo Maestri and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
