A Flemish painter active at the turn of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, Louis de Caullery was born around 1580 in Cambrai and worked mainly in Antwerp. Trained in that city within the Guild of Saint Luke, he became a master there in 1602; one source records him as active until his death in 1621.
His compositions are described as dense, populated by elegantly dressed figures and structured by elaborate architectural settings. He often worked on copper. One source notes Italian and Flemish Mannerist influences in his art, citing in particular Paul Bril and Hans Vredeman de Vries.
La Vue de la Piazzetta à Venise, an oil painting on parqueted wood measuring 51 × 66 cm and listed under his name, offers a concrete example of this attention to architecture and the organisation of space. In the foreground, black gondolas drop off their passengers; the square unfolds in a strict central perspective that accentuates its depth. The Doge’s Palace is on the right, while the Biblioteca Marciana and the campanile occupy the left; Saint Mark’s Basilica appears in the background, with the columns surmounted by the lion of Saint Mark and Saint Theodore.
Other works are listed under his name, including Le Colosse de Rhodes, Les Trois Croix and The Burning of Troy.
