Romanian painter and draughtsman Iosif Iser trained in Munich before working as a cartoonist and spending time in Paris. His contributions to the press accompanied a sustained engagement with graphic art. During a Paris stay in 1921, Pascin encouraged him to take up printmaking, which became another field for his exploration of the human figure.
In Tatar Family at Romania’s National Museum of Art, mourners gather in a Muslim cemetery in Dobruja. Compact figures and the geometry of the tombstones organise this large canvas. The museum relates its construction to Cézanne’s legacy. Drawing’s importance to Iser also emerges from the holdings presented by the Romanian Academy Library in 2018: more than seven hundred drawings and about sixty prints, largely donated by the artist himself.
This profile brings together identity references for Iosif Iser and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
