Pieter Codde

Born : 1599Died : 1678

Pieter Codde (1599–1678), born and deceased in Amsterdam, was a Dutch painter of portraits and genre scenes. His training remains uncertain, but his marriage record of 1623 already identifies him as a painter. He worked principally in Amsterdam. In 1637 he was commissioned to complete The Meagre Company, a large civic guard portrait begun by Frans Hals and now held by the Rijksmuseum.

His small paintings depict elegant gatherings, musicians and interiors in which posture and clothing characterise the figures. An often silvery palette accompanies close observation of social relationships. He also painted historical and religious subjects. The National Gallery in London holds A Woman holding a Mirror, dated 1625, and a family portrait of 1640, among his works.

This profile brings together identity references for Pieter Codde and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
