Julie Rrap, born in Lismore in 1950, examines representations of the female body and the mechanisms through which it is identified and commodified. After studying at the University of Queensland, she pursued training in painting, drawing and photographic media in Sydney. She lived in France and Belgium from 1986 to 1994.
Her first solo exhibition, Disclosures: A Photographic Construct, presented in Sydney in 1982 under the name Julie Brown, brought together photographs of her own naked body. In Transpositions (1994), one hundred panels of historical portraits of women confront viewers with the subjects’ gazes. Sydney’s Museum of Contemporary Art devoted the retrospective Body Double to her in 2007. Her works are held by institutions including the Art Gallery of New South Wales.
This profile brings together identity references for Julie Rrap and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
