Johannes Lingelbach, baptised in Frankfurt in 1622 and deceased in Amsterdam in 1674, belonged to the Italianate painters active in the Netherlands. Following a stay in Rome documented during the 1640s, he composed animated views, imaginary harbours and genre scenes in Amsterdam. His repertoire brings ancient architecture together with the everyday activities of travellers, traders and local inhabitants, arranging figures and buildings within a shared pictorial setting.
Italian Marketplace with a Quack Dentist, dated 1651 and held by the Rijksmuseum, gathers ruins, vendors and players around a practitioner on horseback. Harbour on the Mediterranean of 1670, at the Mauritshuis, combines classical architecture, figures and a camel in an invented space. These compositions use memories and studies brought back from Italy to construct plausible scenes without claiming to reproduce a particular place exactly.
This profile brings together identity references for Johannes Lingelbach and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
