Born in Bohemia, porcelain painter Josef Karl Rädler (1844–1917) pursued a career in this field in Vienna. From 1852 to 1856, he learned the craft at the Haas & Czjzek manufactory in Horní Slavkov. In 1890, he parted ways with Pilz and continued his work alone.
Transferred to Mauer-Öhling in 1905, he created works there related to his daily life in the institution, including portraits of patients and scenes of dormitories, walks and celebrations. His works are shown at the Museum of Lower Austria in 1994 as part of an exhibition accompanied by a catalogue, according to one source. In 2009, the Wellcome Collection in London presents his paintings in the exhibition “Madness & Modernity: Mental Illness and the Visual Arts in Vienna 1900”. The exhibition “Josef Karl Rädler : la clé des champs” runs from 3 February to 27 March 2022.
This profile brings together identity references for Josef Karl Rädler and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
