Jan Fyt (1611–1661), a Flemish painter and etcher born in Antwerp, trained with Hans van der Berch and subsequently Frans Snyders. Representations of animals, game and hunting scenes occupy a central place in his work. His travels also took him to Italy, including Naples, Florence, Venice and Rome.
Alongside these animal subjects, Fyt painted flowers, fruit and vegetables. A still life signed and dated 1652 brings together figs, onions and a large cabbage, revealing another aspect of his practice. Madrid’s Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza holds a composition combining a vase of flowers with two bundles of asparagus, while a mushroom still life is recorded at the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium. These works extend his repertoire beyond hunting subjects.
This profile brings together identity references for Jan Fyt and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
