David Teniers the Elder

Born : 1582Died : 1649

David Teniers the Elder was an Antwerp painter admitted as a guild master in 1606. The father of David Teniers the Younger, he produced a distinct body of work that includes small religious and mythological paintings as well as altarpieces. His carefully described figures often appear within wooded landscapes.

Christ on the Cross between the Two Thieves, signed D. Teniers and attributed to him and dated around 1640 by the Louvre, is related by the museum to Rubens’s Three Crosses. The Temptation of Saint Anthony in Budapest’s Museum of Fine Arts also belongs to his religious production. Prints circulated his compositions: the Metropolitan Museum’s Temptation of Christ is an etching made in 1644–1652 by Wenceslaus Hollar after Teniers, rather than a print executed by the painter.
