Johan Laurentz Jensen (1800–1856), born in Gentofte and deceased in Copenhagen, was a Danish painter specialising in flowers and still lifes. He studied with Christoffer Wilhelm Eckersberg and C. D. Fritzsch. A stay in Sèvres in 1822 preceded his appointment as principal painter at the Royal Copenhagen manufactory. He lived in France and Italy from 1833 to 1835 and travelled to Paris and Holland in 1845. His compositions feature bouquets, fruit, potted plants and individual flowers. The writer Hans Christian Andersen and artist Bertel Thorvaldsen were among his admirers and collectors. An exhibition catalogue published by Hirschl & Adler in 1989 was devoted to his work under the title Father of Danish Flower Painting.
