Joan Brown made personal experience a source of imagery open to fantasy. Born in San Francisco in 1938, she studied with Elmer Bischoff at the California School of Fine Arts and participated in the renewal of figurative painting in the Bay Area. Her early works employed thick paint. She subsequently transformed her visual language to give greater space to autobiography and spiritual inquiry.
Strong colours and simplified figures connect lived events with a symbolic world. San Francisco and international travel informed compositions in which humour accompanies metaphysical questions. Brown began teaching at Berkeley in 1975 and also developed large sculptures and mosaics. She died in India in 1990. The changes across her work reflect enduring artistic independence and a continuing search for forms capable of expressing personal experience.
