Born in Mumbai in 1974, Jitish Kallat works with painting, drawing, photography, video and installation. His projects connect collective history with the individual’s position within a wider world. Written documents sometimes become the very material of an environment through which the public can walk, encountering historical language as a physical presence.
In Covering Letter, from 2012, a letter Gandhi addressed to Hitler in 1939 appears on a curtain of mist. This appeal to avoid war dissolves within the visitor’s space. Covering Letter (Terranum Nuncius) expands the scale to the cosmos: the work revisits the 116 images and greetings in 55 languages on the record sent with Voyager in 1977. These messages to an extraterrestrial intelligence offer a portrait of humanity and its terrestrial environment.
This profile brings together identity references for Jitish Kallat and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
