Joris van Son became a master in Antwerp in 1643. His still lifes combine fruit, flowers and precious objects. In Rummer in a Niche with Flowers and Fruit at Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, dated around 1656, these elements occupy an architectural setting. Worcester’s Still Life, painted in 1658, brings together seven varieties of fruit, several imported, with different types of wine glass.
His Still Life with a Lobster at the Fitzwilliam Museum carries its signature and the date 1660 in a cartouche. Abundance can also become a meditation on human life: in the Walters Art Museum’s Allegory, a garland surrounds a skull, a candle and an hourglass. Concealed by later overpainting, the skull was revealed during conservation treatment in 1988.
