Zoma Baitler

Born : 1908Died : 1994

Zoma Baitler (1908–1994), a Uruguayan artist born in Lithuania, first trained with Paul Kaufman before settling in Montevideo in 1927. There he pursued his work in contact with Joaquín Torres García without fully adopting a constructivist aesthetic. Landscape and still life became preferred fields for a painting practice that passed through several orientations, from impressionism to expressionist accents. His activity extended beyond the studio: he worked in the press, travelled in Europe and helped introduce Uruguayan art to wider audiences. As cultural attaché in Israel during the 1960s, he lectured on Figari, Barradas and Torres García. Creation, writing and teaching thus accompanied a body of work informed by places and artistic encounters.
