Also known as Carl Hermann Robert Dietrich Max Kuchel, Max Kuchel was the son and pupil of the painter Theodor Kuchel. Trained as a drawing teacher, he studied at the Düsseldorf Academy in 1881 under Heinrich Lauenstein. After teaching drawing in Hamburg-Altona from 1883 to 1885, he settled in Hamburg from 1888 onwards. The following year, he opened a studio there for female students, where landscape painting and still life were taught, and which he directed until 1909. His involvement in regional artistic circles is reflected in his membership of the Schleswig-Holstein Art Cooperative and the Association of North German Artists; from 1888, he was also a member of the Hamburg Artists’ Association, founded in 1832, where he sometimes served as secretary.
His painting trips took him to Dachau and, regularly between 1881 and 1911, to Rügen, the island of Vilm and the Darss. From 1912, a house combining living quarters and studio was built for him in Klein-Flottbek, in the Hamburg district of Othmarschen. Among the documented works is Abendstimmung mit Kühen bei der Tränke, an oil on canvas signed and dated 1887, offered at auction and sold for CHF 400, excluding fees. Another lot comprises three landscapes of northern Germany, dated circa 1900–1910 and executed in oil on panel or on canvas mounted on panel; the sale catalogue states that each bore a confirmation of authenticity from Johannes Kuchel on the reverse.
This profile brings together identity references for Max Kuchel and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
