Jan Henryk Rosen (1891–1982) was a Polish painter born in Warsaw, also known in the United States as John de Rosen. His father, a painter, taught him drawing. He developed a career devoted to religious decoration, combining murals, mosaics and stained glass. Between 1925 and 1929 he executed paintings in Lviv's Armenian cathedral, a major stage in his European career.
His compositions connect sacred figures, strong colour and architectural organisation. He also worked in the papal chapel at Castel Gandolfo before continuing his career in the United States, where he taught at the Catholic University of America. Christ in Majesty in Washington's National Shrine basilica, completed for the 1959 dedication, demonstrates the scale of his monumental commissions and their integration into liturgical space.
This profile brings together identity references for Jan Henryk de Rosen and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
