Jan Coelenbier

Born around 1610 in Kortrijk, Jan Coelenbier worked in Haarlem, where his life ended in 1680. A painter and draughtsman, he also dealt in art. This dual occupation placed him within the artistic milieu of the Dutch Republic. The Princely Collections of Liechtenstein hold his Castle by the Water, an oil painting on panel measuring 67 by 115 centimetres, acquired in 1834.

River Scene at the Agnes Etherington Art Centre, around 1640, is an oil painting on canvas originally oval in format. A fisherman, his family and geese animate the bank; thin, translucent paint recalls Van Goyen. The Castle formerly appeared under attributions to Aelbert Cuyp or to Jan van Goyen in the historical catalogues of the princely collection, before being assigned to Coelenbier.

This profile brings together identity references for Jan Coelenbier and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
