James Pattison Cockburn

Born : 1779Died : 1847

James Pattison Cockburn combined a career as a British officer with topographical watercolour painting. Trained in drawing by Paul Sandby at Woolwich from 1793 to 1795, he stayed in Quebec in 1822–1823 and again from 1826 to 1832. Military inspections took him as far as Niagara. His views of Quebec and Montreal combine architecture and landscape with scenes of daily life.

Monument to Wolfe and Montcalm, Quebec, dated around 1828–1832 by the National Gallery of Canada, uses watercolour over pen and brown ink. The Ice Cutters, an ink and wash drawing of 1830 held in Quebec, depicts winter labour. His images also circulated as prints: the general view of Niagara Falls published by Ackermann in 1833 is an aquatint by John Edge after Cockburn.
