James Baker Pyne

Born : 1800Died : 1870

Born in Bristol in 1800 and deceased in London in 1870, James Baker Pyne was largely self-taught. During the 1820s he participated in the sketching activities of the Bristol School, developing landscapes responsive to Francis Danby’s atmospheric effects. His move to London in 1835 accompanied a shift towards Turner’s compositions and colour harmonies, an influence that shaped his mature painting.

Journeys on the Continent, particularly in Italy, expanded a repertoire embracing both British places and European views. Ehrenbreitstein, from Coblenz on the Rhine, painted in 1864 and held by the Russell-Cotes, exemplifies this geographical range. His imagery also circulated through prints: a coloured lithograph of Windsor in the National Trust collection depicts skaters on the Thames before the castle. Monumental landscape and everyday activity meet within the same image.

This profile brings together identity references for James Baker Pyne and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
