Joseph Raumann (1908–1999), a painter of Hungarian origin, was self-taught before developing his activity in France. His career included exhibitions at Goupil in Paris and a lasting connection with the artistic community of Agen, notably the Amis des Arts. Initially interested in symbolic abstraction, he later moved towards a more figurative approach. Scenes with figures and waterside landscapes formed part of his subject matter, with recurring attention to harbours, rivers and beaches. He used oil on canvas or panel to explore these settings. Views of Normandy and Agen document the range of his motifs, while the museum in Agen has also highlighted his qualities as a colourist within its presentation of local painting.
