Giuseppe De Nittis was born in Barletta in 1846 and died in Saint-Germain-en-Laye in 1884. He divided his working life between Naples, Paris and London, observing modern life on boulevards and racecourses with attention to clothing and changing atmospheric conditions. Invited by Degas, he contributed five works to the first Impressionist exhibition in 1874 while also exhibiting at the Paris Salon.
His Stormy Sky, about 1867–68, in the Fondation Custodia, shows sunlight breaking through clouds above the sea. This small study reflects his practice of painting outdoors. The Place des Pyramides, an oil painting of 1875 in the Musée d’Orsay, turns his attention to the city; he donated it to the Musée du Luxembourg in 1883. De Nittis also experimented with pastel in large-scale works.
