Antonio Zanchi was born in Este in 1631 and died in Venice in 1722. He belonged to the Venetian painters known as the tenebrosi. His dense colour and pronounced contrasts of light developed in dialogue with Luca Giordano and Giovanni Battista Langetti. He opened a painting academy in Venice in 1662 and received commissions for the city’s churches.
At the Scuola Grande di San Rocco, two large canvases painted in 1666 commemorate the plague of 1630. The pilaster separating them becomes part of the composition, while the Virgin and Saint Roch intercede for Venice. A drawing of the Presentation of the Virgin in the Temple, held in Washington and dated around 1700, combines pen, brown wash and black chalk with a grid for transferring the composition.
This profile brings together identity references for Antonio Zanchi and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
