Antonio Tempesta, a Florentine painter and printmaker, participated as a young artist in the decoration of the Palazzo Vecchio under Vasari. His prints became models for other artists. His painting also explored unusual supports: in Pearl Fishing, preserved at the Louvre, oil on lapis lazuli brings divers, canoes and the gathering of shells into a marine landscape.
Hunting scenes engage with the movements of animals and their pursuers. One print shows a stag driven into a river, a boar, dogs and mounted hunters. Other subjects take on an allegorical dimension. In The Silver Age, peasants work, thatch huts and prepare food. Human activities thus join animal imagery in a repertoire widely disseminated through printmaking.
This profile brings together identity references for Antonio Tempesta and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
