Born in Rio de Janeiro, Hélio Oiticica studied with Ivan Serpa at the city's Museum of Modern Art. Emerging from the geometric investigations of Grupo Frente and Neo-Concretism, he gradually moved colour beyond the painting. Reliefs, suspended structures and penetrable spaces invite people to circulate within the work. Perception engages the whole body and connects with the rhythms and practices of everyday life.
His involvement with the Mangueira samba school informed the Parangolés, coloured capes activated by their wearers' movements. Tropicália, presented in 1967, similarly transforms exhibition space into a journey. Oiticica subsequently developed environments and experiments related to cinema. His work brings together formal invention, popular culture and reflection on freedom, making participation an essential condition of artistic experience as the work unfolds through bodily engagement.
