Mateus Manaure

Born : 1926Died : 2018Documented citizenships : Venezuela

Mateo Manaure (1926–2018), born in Uracoa, was a Venezuelan painter associated with the development of abstraction in his country. Moving to Paris in 1947, he joined Los Disidentes, a group formed in 1950 to challenge dominant academic models in Venezuela. Contact with European avant-gardes transformed his approach to colour, planes and composition.

In Caracas, his murals contributed to the integration of the arts in the university campus designed by Carlos Raúl Villanueva. Geometry and colour interact with façades and circulation spaces. His work also passed through a more lyrical phase attentive to material. The Cuvisiones and later Polychrome Columns investigate the cube, perception and relationships between surface and volume. Manaure thus sustained a dialogue between painting, architecture and urban space.
