The Swedish painter and graphic artist Evert Lundquist traces part of his career through the communal life of Saltsjö-Duvnäs, where reflection on the materiality of painting is nourished by rural everyday life. Born in Stockholm on 17 July 1904, Evert Ernst Erland Olof Lundquist died there on 4 November 1994. From 1925 to 1931, he studied at the Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts under Carl Wilhelmson, who had previously been his teacher. He also trained at the Académie Julian in Paris under Paul Albert Laurens.
He lived and worked in Saltsjö-Duvnäs, a suburb of Stockholm. In the late 1940s and early 1950s, he shared the Olle Nyman family home with his wife Ebba Reutercrona, Roland Kempe and Staffan Hallström. The group took rural everyday life as its starting point and set out to explore the materiality of painting. For Lundquist, this attention to painting as material was thus part of a shared experience of life and work. His work also included teaching: he began teaching painting at Gerlesborgskolan in 1959, then joined the Royal Institute of Art in 1960, where he taught for ten years.
In the early 1980s, his eyesight gradually deteriorated and he painted less; his last known paintings date from 1989–1990. In 1984, he published his autobiography, From the Life of a Painter, which was also published in Swedish under the title Ur ett Målarliv.
