Paulus Moreelse participated in Utrecht’s artistic and civic life during the early seventeenth century. Born around 1571, he died in 1638. He is best known as a portrait painter, although he also treated pastoral and mythological subjects. In 1611 he became the first dean of the newly founded Guild of Saint Luke. His sitters included prosperous citizens who, like the painter himself, took part in city government.
The portraits of Philips Ram and his wife Anna Strick, painted in 1625, represent this urban clientele and Moreelse’s attention to fabrics. Portrait of a Man, Probably from the Pauw Family, dated 1625 and on loan to the Rijksmuseum, retains its original frame. The sitter’s identity remains uncertain: his restrained fashionable dress communicates social standing more securely than it establishes a name.
This profile brings together identity references for Paulus Moreelse and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
