José María Sicilia

Documented citizenships : Spain

José María Sicilia, born in Madrid in 1954, moved to Paris in 1980 after leaving his academic training. His early expressive landscapes gave way to an exploration of everyday objects and then of pictorial matter. A stay in New York in the mid-1980s accompanied this movement towards abstraction. He received Spain’s National Prize for Visual Arts in 1989.

In the late 1980s and early 1990s, he investigated white surfaces and introduced wax combined with oil paint. Light, transparency and traces became central to these explorations. L’Horabaixa, held at the Palacio de Velázquez in 1997, brought together wax panels on wood. The series La luz que se apaga extends this attention to the appearance and disappearance of forms within the painted surface.

This profile brings together identity references for José María Sicilia and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
