Giuseppe Zais devoted himself to landscape painting in eighteenth-century Venice. Born in Canale d’Agordo near Belluno, he developed a manner informed by Marco Ricci and Francesco Zuccarelli. His pastoral scenes place elegant or peasant figures within imagined settings. He also painted landscapes and town views for the corridors of the Villa Pisani at Stra.
Landscape with a Group of Figures in London’s National Gallery, probably painted between 1770 and 1780, sets a conversation on one riverbank against rural activities on the other. Trees, a village and distant mountains organise the recession, rendered through rich colour and substantial paint. Couples near a Fountain, in the Gallerie dell’Accademia, belongs to his gallant subjects, a strand probably also informed by the circulation of Watteau’s inventions through prints.
